We can and do read not only words and pictures but faces, clouds, waves, and even stones.
Robert Scholes, from Protocols of Reading

Overview
Contents of this page serve as a companion to my next book Illuminating Texts: How to Teach Students to Read the World. Contents of the Illuminating Texts web site correspond with the chapters in that book. Central to the book's argument is the idea that texts come in many forms and serve many functions these days, not all of which can be served by paper alone. This site tries to deliver on the promise and potential of technology to provide readers a variety of texts in different media, all in an effort to convey the ideas and information in the most appropriate and effective way possible.

Table of Contents

  1. Introduction: Reading the World (excerpt)
  2. Reading the Internet
  3. Reading Textbooks
  4. Reading a Test
  5. Reading Literature
  6. Reading Information
  7. Reading Images
  8. Epilogue: Reading the Future (excerpt)

Additional Resources and Readings

  1. Reading the Media (not included in the book)
The omission of a chapter titled "Reading the Media" from my book might seem conspicuous. Instead of creating a separate chapter, however, I incorporated media literacy throughout the book since the media is infused throughout the world we are always learning to read. I created this separate section in order to organize and feature certain specific media resources we might all find useful in our classes.
  2. Developing Students Textual Intelligence Through Grammar: This article originally appeared in the NCTE journal
    Voices from the Middle
. It provides some useful and, I hope, interesting ways of exploring the ideas of textual intelligence in the area of grammar and language study.
